The parking lot near Building 1202 became a wading pool for this ROME truck as a result of flooding from the past week's monsoon. In some areas, even the water was underwater. Rainfall from Sunday to the morning of Friday, Oct. 1, totalled 10 to 14.5 inches, according to Langley's Flight Service Office weather report. Credit: NASA/Sean Smith

Langley researchers have been testing the Boeing Aerodynamic Efficiency Improvement Joined Wing Wind Tunnel Model in the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. They're working with the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop technologies for future high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft. The joined wing model ''flew'' in the tunnel so engineers could check out surfaces and sensors that help control the aircraft. Credit: NASA Langley/Sean Smith

The Orion Launch Abort System, or LAS, pathfinder returned home to NASA Langley on Monday for a short stay as it makes its way to NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The hardware was built at Langley and was used in preparation for the highly successful launch abort system flight test, called Pad Abort, at the U.S. Army's White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The LAS pathfinder has made several stops on its cross-country trek in an effort to excite the public about space exploration. This Friday,...

Research pilot Dan Murri controls the remotely piloted AirSTAR (Airborne Subscale Transport Aircraft Research) generic transport model from inside a specially equipped control room on wheels. Looking on is flight test director Kevin Cunningham. During these and other flight tests at Fort Pickett, near Blacktone, Va., the AirSTAR team successfully demonstrated computer software and control systems that may some day prevent airliners from going into steep dives and other extreme conditions....

Engineers performed a series of tests in the 20-ft. Vertical Spin Tunnel recently that measured the aerodynamics of a 6.25 percent model of the Orion crew module with deployed drogue parachutes. The purpose of the test was to compare how the model performed in simulated flight versus a free-flight flight test in the tunnel. Credit: NASA/Sean Smith

LARSS participants Jake and Jacqueline were part of a multidisciplinary student research team establishing a robotics lab that can address swarming problems for autonomous air and ground vehicles. Their team, mentored by Garry Qualls, combined commercial radio control vehicles, low cost microcontrollers, a commercial motion capture system and software they wrote themselves to get the lab up and running. The primary aircraft currently operating in the lab are quadcopters. These small-scale...
