Since last week's groundbreaking ceremony workers have removed tree branches and have cut on the inside left and right tree lines to get the side ready for excavation. Research pilot Dan Murri controls the remotely piloted AirSTAR (Airborne Subscale Transport Aircraft Research) generic transport model from inside a specially equipped control room on wheels. Looking on is flight test director Kevin Cunningham. During these and other flight tests at Fort Pickett, near Blacktone, Va., the AirSTAR team successfully demonstrated computer software and control systems that may some day prevent airliners from going into steep dives and other extreme conditions....

LARSS participants Jake and Jacqueline were part of a multidisciplinary student research team establishing a robotics lab that can address swarming problems for autonomous air and ground vehicles. Their team, mentored by Garry Qualls, combined commercial radio control vehicles, low cost microcontrollers, a commercial motion capture system and software they wrote themselves to get the lab up and running.
