A view of a computer-generated model of the Earth's magnetosphere. Semi-transparent surfaces represent particle density (red is high, blue is low) and silvery tubes represent the magnetic field lines. In this particular model, the solar wind has an ambient density of 8.35 particles/cm^3. The isosurfaces are then red (> 17 particles/cm^3), yellow (> 12 particles/cm^3), green (> 8.6 particles/cm^3) and blue ( < 1.0 particle/cm^3). Note: Fly-around view of the Earth's magnetosphere....

The Goddard Space Flight Center was named in honor of Dr. Robert Goddard, a pioneer in rocket development. Dr. Goddard received patents for a multi-stage rocket and liquid propellants in 1914 and published a paper describing how to reach extreme altitudes six years later. That paper, "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes," detailed methods for raising weather-recording instruments higher than what could be achieved by balloons and explained the mathematical theories of rocket...

Before the late eighteenth century, residents of England didn't necessarily take much interest in the rocks under their feet. The arrival of the Industrial Revolution, however, drew the attention of the country's entrepreneurs downward. England's industrialists began plunging deep underground for coal -- the fossilized remains of ancient swamps -- and carving canals across the countryside to transport it efficiently. In this environment, a geologist named William Smith managed to marry his...

This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image clearly shows the division between the Pacific Northwest´s lush, forested western coast and its arid eastern plains. The dividing line is the rugged Cascade Mountain Range, the crowning jewel of which is the snow-capped Mount Rainier. At 4,392 meters in elevation, Mount Rainier's volcanic peak towers 1.5 miles...

Like the freshly raked white sand of a well-tended Japanese garden, rows of clouds stream over the Bering Sea from the edge of the sea ice. Called cloud streets, these cumulus clouds form when cold air from the ice blows over the open ocean, chilling the moist air. As the temperature drops, water freezes into tiny clouds, which are arranged in neat rows in line with the powerful sweep of the wind. Though some clouds form over the cracking sea ice on the right side of the image, most are over...

The Voyager aircraft circles before landing at Edwards Air Force Base, Edwards, California, to complete it's record breaking, nonstop unfueled flight around the world. The Voyager landed at Edwards at 8:06 a.m. PST Dec. 23, 1986, after a nine-day flight. Richard Rutan and Jeana Yeager piloted the aircraft from a cramped cockpit. Voyager's takeoff weight was more than 10 times the structural weight, but its drag was lower than almost any other powered aircraft. The aircraft's design and...

According to the folklore of the Celts and other ancient cultures, Halloween marked the midpoint between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice on the astronomical calendar, a spooky night when spirits of the dead spread havoc upon their return to Earth. Nowadays, Halloween is primarily a time for children to dress in costume and demand treats, but the original spirit of Halloween lives on in the sky in the guise of the Crab Nebula.
