Previously, preliminary data on the ability of a group of common indoor plants to remove organic chemical from indoor air was presented. The group of plants chosen for this study was determined by joint agreement between NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America. The chemicals chosen for study were benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. The results show that plants can play a major role in removal of organic chemicals from indoor air.

Transformation of data into knowledge through conceptual induction has been the focus of our research described in this paper. We have developed a Machine Learning System (MLS) to analyze the rocket engine simulation data. MLS can provide to its users fault analysis, characteristics, and conceptual descriptions of faults, and the relationships of attributes and sensors. All the results are critically important in identifying faults.

Outgassing data, derived from tests at 398 K (125 C) for 24 hours in a vacuum as per ASTM E 595-84, have been compiled for numerous materials for spacecraft use. The data presented are the total mass loss (TML) and the collected volatile condensable materials (CVCM). The various materials are compiled by likely usage and alphabetically.

In the opening weeks of 1998 a news article in the British journal Nature reported that NASA was about to enter biology in a big way. A ''virtual'' Astrobiology Institute was gearing up for business, and NASA administrator Dan Goldin told his external advisory council that he would like to see spending on the new institute eventually reach 100 million per year. ''You just wait for the screaming from the physical scientists (when that happens),'' Goldin was quoted as saying. Nevertheless, by the...

This book is, in essence, sixteen years in the making. First attempted to compile a history of the Soviet space program in 1982 author put together a rough chronology of the main events. A decade later, while living on a couch in a college friend's apartment, he began writing what would be a short history of the Soviet lunar landing program. The first draft was sixty-nine pages long. Late the following year, he decided to expand the topic to handle all early Soviet piloted exploration programs....

Near Earth objects (NEOs) are attractive targets for spacecraft missions with the purpose of obtaining greater insight to the nature of the original bodies from which the terrestrial planets formed, without having to visit the Main Belt itself. This report describes a search for NEOs that would be accessible for missions launching in...

In this approach, BWB transports are sized based on the number of passengers in each class that must fit inside the centerbody or pressurized vessel. Weight estimation equations for this centerbody structure were developed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This paper shows how the...

This paper contains a critical comparison of estimators minimizing Wahba's loss function. Some new results are presented for the QUaternion ESTimator (QUEST) and EStimators of the Optimal Quaternion (ESOQ and ESOQ2) to avoid the computational burden of sequential rotations in these algorithms. None of these methods is as robust in principle as Davenport's q method or the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method, which are significantly slower. Robustness is only an issue for measurements with...

The axial and radial fields at any point inside or outside a finite solenoid with infinitely thin walls are derived. Solution of the equations has been obtained in terms of tabulated complete elliptic integrals. For the axial field an accurate approximation is given in terms of elementary functions. Fields internal and external to the solenoid are presented in graphical form for a wide variety of solenoid lengths.

This Final Report is a summary of the work that was performed under Contract NAS8-38075 between NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Remote Sensing Systems from September 1989 to September 1992. The primary accomplishment was the delivery of Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) data tapes containing sensor and geophysical products. In all, 515 tapes (80 gigabytes) were delivered. These tapes contained the F08 SSM/I data for the period from July 1988 through December 1991 and the F10 SSM/I...

Marshall Space Flight Center and other NASA installations have a continuing requirement for materials data from other countries involved with the development of joint international Spacelab experiments and other hardware. This need includes collecting data for common alloys to ascertain composition, physical properties, specifications, and designations. This data is scattered throughout a large number of specification statements, standards, handbooks, and other technical literature which make a...

A SURVEY IS MADE OF CURRENT THEORIES OF RADIATION TRANSFER WHICH MAY BE APPLIED TO THE PROPAGATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES IN SEAWATER. THE PHYSICAL FACTORS PROVIDING OPTICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SEAWATER ARE REVIEWED, AND THE VARIOUS METHODS OF CALCULATING THEM ARE DISCUSSED IN BRIEF. AN EVALUATION IS MADE OF THE METHODS CURRENTLY EMPLOYED AND THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF EACH METHOD ARE PRESENTED.
