Metadata is data that describes data. There are many computer forensic uses of metadata and being able to extract metadata automatically provides positive forensic implications. This thesis presents a new technique for batch processing disk images and automatically extracting metadata from files and file contents. The technique is embodied in a program called fiwalk that has a plug-in architecture allowing new metadata extractors to be readily incorporated. Output from fiwalk can be provided in...

Advanced missile guidance laws may provide an air-to-air combat tactical advantage by increasing effective missile range. The current standard in missile guidance, proportional navigation (PN), is only optimal against a non-maneuvering target. Differential geometry (DG) guidance is optimized for a maneuvering target. Analysis of the DG guidance equation indicates noise degrades DG performance more than PN. This thesis evaluates the effect of Kalman filtered noise on PN and DG performance. A...

Any insurgency is a complex and dynamic phenomenon, as is the process of developing agood strategy to counter it. Understanding such types of dynamic complexity demands that strategists expand the boundaries of their mental models. A good strategy does not rely exclusively on a strategist's talent; it is conditioned on a holistic understanding of causal relationships encompassed in the problem and interactions among variables. This thesis analyzes the Peruvian insurgency of Sendero Luminoso...

Preparedness agencies fail to act on gaps identified by exercises; instead, they repeat exercises and never move to resolve issues. After-action reports document exercise findings, but are not shared with forward-facing staff who do the work. Agencies spend federal money exercising capabilities, but fail to implement changes recommended by exercise evaluations. Yet some agencies are able to report successful after-action events and document improved capability performance. This thesis...

The U.S. Navy’s strategy calls for maintaining dominance in the undersea domain. One way to add undersea warfare capability is to team the P-8 Poseidon with the Medium Displacement Unmanned Surface Vessel (MDUSV). A tool to study the potential benefit of integrating the two platforms is Orchestration Simulation Through Modeling (OSM), which allows the modeler to use a map of the world to define a combat zone, build agents with pre-defined behaviors and states, and run hundreds of thousands of...

The United States Border Patrol (USBP) is responsible for interdicting unauthorized entry into the U.S. The USBP must decide how to allocate its detection and interdiction assets to maximize the probability of catching illegal aliens along the border. We study the case where an infiltrator can observe USBP preparations, and then choose a path into the U.S. We define the infiltrator's courses of actions to maximize the probability of escape, and then express the USPB's courses of actions to...

This thesis seeks to conduct a limited validation study of the Knowledge Based Logistics Planning Shell using the method of sensitivity analysis. Three parameters of the model (unit size, battle intensity, and consumer residual percentage) are varied within the context of a 2 X 3 X 3 fixed factorial model. Measurements of three measures of effectiveness: (1) Time to run demand generator, (2) Time to run distribution planner, and (3) Percentage fill of orders generated are used as data for the...

This thesis develops an architecture that facilitates the design and indoor testing of control algorithms implemented onboard quadrotor UAV's using an ultra-wideband (UWB) indoor positioning solution from Ubisense. Initially, details are provided on basic quadrotor dynamics, the setup of the indoor sensor environment, and the communication scheme. A thorough analysis is conducted on the accuracy and estimation lag of Ubisense UWB sensors for providing indoor position information to the...

There currently exists a critical consensus that India’s leaders lack a grand strategy to direct internal and external policies. Recent literature focuses increasingly on this issue to address the question of India’s ability to counter China’s rising influence in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region. This thesis analyzes the ideological and historical factors that have contributed to India’s grand strategy policy-making process. Specifically, the research focuses on two primary...

Recent conflicts have directed much academic and media attention to special operations forces (SOF). Despite the attention, the application of SOF in asymmetric conventional warfare or irregular conflict has not been fully examined in the context of just war theory. In addition, SOF have often been portrayed superficially, painting them as indiscriminate or unscrupulous warriors. This thesis argues to the contrary, that the application of SOF represents an evolution of just war theory in an era...

Data has been collected on acoustic vector sensors mounted on autonomous underwater gliders in the Monterey Bay during 2012–2013. Previous processing work computed the acoustic vector intensity to estimate bearing to impulsive sources of interest. These sources included small explosive shots deployed by local fishermen and humpback whale vocalizations. While the highly impulsive shot data produced unambiguous bearing estimations, the longer duration whale vocalizations showed a fairly wide...
