In 2001, while visiting Brugges, Belgium, I recorded these church bells. The ringing seemed to come from all corners of the city. The mic (a Sony) was placed out the third-floor window of where I was staying. Recorded straight onto a Sharp minidisc. The ringing lasted about eight minutes. This is a 320kbps mp3; I've also posted an aiff.

This "song" is a frankensteinian hybridic mixture of two previously uploaded open source audio recordings: the colorado river (frogs!) field recordings and Clarence Ashley's, "my sweet farm girl". I finagled it around a bit to get it to sound interesting to say the least. I got it so the frogs seem to be singing along at times. :)

In July of 2001, while conducting research for a book project, I followed the Tour de France for a few weeks. On the 21st, for better or worse, I started recording myself while stuck in traffic. Armed with my Minidisc, I attempted to catch up with the Tour in the Pyrenees. I also recorded a portion of the next day's stage to the mountain top finish at Luz-Ardiden. I've included a rough transcription below. The first sixteen minutes are banal. Late in the file, while waiting for the race, I meet...

I presented this piece at Field Effects 15. http://www.quietamerican.org/fe15.html The sound recordings were gathered over the month of October 2002, when I walked in a circle around the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. The distance was about 300 miles. It took about 30 days. Throughout the trip, I was largely self-sufficient. I put myself on a budget of one dollar per mile. This was more than enough to buy the food and first aid products that I needed to complete the journey. The sounds are:...

Our reality is of dialectics. Hot-cold, peace-war, friend-foe, lost-found, dark-light. One side cannot exist without the other. We should appreciate our opponents and embrace their different views, aware always of the small one-sided part we must play to keep the balance and avoid mediocrity.

The file is corrupt. Please ignore. The selfishness of the destruction of love is blind to the temporary reality of our life. Yet love forever blooms and irresistably heals. I came up with these guitar parts & vocal line, originally as a hard rock song, with no words. I was in a funky metal college band at the time(called Skunk), so we added silly words, a great funky baseline and a drum beat, and it became a funky song. This is the funky version but unplugged and needing a base & drum somewhere...

Welcome to the world of Superskank - where ska meets Cornish boys. This band are ripping up the local Skanking scene in Cornwall. Superskank were formed in the summer of 2000, after much drinking, smoking and listening to every style of ska music known to man. The band started rehearsing in an old pig shed, taking their inspiration from roots and two tone ska, with a spot of the Clash thrown in. Recent gigs have been getting rave reviews.
