We propose a Landau-de Gennes phenomenological model to describe the pressure induced smectic A-nematic phase transition. The pressure induced smectic A phase transitions are discussed for varying coupling between orientational and translational order parameter. Increasing the pressure, the first order nematic-smectic A transition becomes second order at a tricritical point which agrees fairly with available experimental results.

In this paper we consider Type I string theory compactified on a Z_7 orbifold. The model has N=1 supersymmetry, a U(4) \otimes U(4) \otimes U(4) \otimes SO(8) gauge group, and chiral matter. There are only D9-branes (for which we discuss tadpole cancellation conditions) in this model corresponding to a perturbative heterotic description in a certain region of the moduli space. We construct the heterotic dual, match the perturbative type I and heterotic tree-level massless spectra via giving...

Different topics on the differential geometry of the complex Grassmann manifold are surveyed in relation to the coherent states. A calculation of the tangent conjugate locus and conjugate locus in the complex Grassmann manifold is presented. The proofs use the Jordan's stationary angles. Also various formulas for the distance on the complex Grassmann manifold are furnished.

$J/\psi$ production cross section considering the contributions of both color-singlet and color-octet $c\bar c$ channels is calculated. The result is used to study the suppression of $J/\psi$ in nuclear collisions. With absorption cross sections for $(c \bar c)_8$ $\sigma_{abs}^8\simeq 11mb $ and $(c \bar c)_1$ $\sigma_{abs}^1\simeq 0mb $ the p-A and A-B data except for Pb-Pb can be explained. Possible explanations of additional suppression in Pb-Pb are discussed.

We have obtained detailed imaging Fabry-Perot observations of the nearby galaxy M82, in order to understand the physical association between the high-velocity outflow and the starburst nucleus. The observed velocities of the emitting gas in M82 reveal a bipolar outflow of material, originating from the bright starburst regions in the galaxy's inner disk, but misaligned with respect to the galaxy spin axis. The deprojected outflow velocity increases with radius from 525 to 655 km/s. Spectral...

A glossy paper brochure with eight panels which share introductions, maps, and schedules for the Astoria Regatta of 1997. The entire brochure is printed in blue ink on white paper. The front cover has a white and light blue background, with dark blue ink that has the date, title, and illustration of a masted ship in the center. The ship is inside a circle that says, "Astoria Regatta Our Beginning on the Waterfront" around it. The circle is then layered inside an eight-pointed ship's...

In the normal phase (where no dynamical fermion mass generation occurs) of the D-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with $N_f$ flavors of fermions, we derive an integral equation which should be satisfied by (the inverse of) the wave function renormalization of the fermion in the Landau gauge. For this we use the inverse Landau-Khalatnikov transformation connecting the nonlocal gauge with the Landau gauge. This leads to a similar equation for the running flavor number in the framework of the...

In models where supersymmetry breaking is communicated into the visible sector via gauge interactions the lightest supersymmetric particle is typically the gravitino which is too light to account for cold dark matter. We point out that the lightest messenger sneutrinos with mass in the range of one to three TeV may serve as cold dark matter over most of the parameter space due to one-loop electroweak radiative corrections. However, in the minimal model this mass range has been excluded by the...

The current understanding of the origin of barium and S stars is reviewed, based on new orbital elements and binary frequencies. The following questions are addressed: (i) Is binarity a necessary condition to produce a barium star? (ii) What is the mass transfer mode (wind accretion or RLOF?) responsible for their formation? (iii) Do barium stars form as dwarfs or as giants? (iv) Do barium stars evolve into Tc-poor S stars? (v) What is the relative frequency of Tc-rich and Tc-poor S stars?

The cosmic string scenario in an open universe is developed -- including the equations of motion, a model of network evolution, the large angular scale CMB temperature anisotropy, and the power spectrum of density fluctuations produced by cosmic strings with dark matter. First we derive the equations of motion for cosmic string in an open FRW space-time and construct a quantitative model of the evolution of the gross features of a cosmic string network. Second, we apply this model of network...

We present Very Low Mass stellar models as computed including non-grey model atmospheres for selected assumptions about the star metallicities. The role of atmospheres is discussed and the models are compared with models based on the Eddington approximation and with similar models appeared in the recent literature. Theoretical predictions concerning both the HR diagram location and the mass-luminosity relation are presented and discussed in terms of expectations in selected photometric bands....

We develop a new approach for bosonization based on the direct comparison of current correlation functions and apply it to the case of the Massive Thirring Model in three dimensions in the weak coupling regime, but with an arbitrary mass. Explicit bosonized forms for the lagrangian and the current are obtained in terms of a vector gauge field. Exact results for the corresponding expressions are also obtained in the case of a free massive fermion. Finally, a comment on the derivation of the...

One of the two forward cameras aboard the Sojourner rover took this image of the Sagan Memorial Station on Sol 25. The camera uses a fisheye lens which produces the illumination gradient in the sky on the western horizon. The angular resolution of the camera is about three milliradians (.018 degrees) per pixel, which is why the image appears grainy. Features seen on the lander include (from left to right): the Atmospheric Structure Instrument / Meteorology Package (ASI/MET) mast with windsocks;...

A new magnetic cataclysmic variable is identified as the counterpart of the X-ray source RX J0719.2+6557. The emission lines show radial velocity variations with a period of 98.2 min. This coincides with the period of deep eclipses (up to 4 mag) in the photometric light curve. The phase of the eclipse relative to the spectroscopic phase, and its structure indicates that the dominant source of emission is located on the stream of accreting matter, which is eclipsed by the secondary companion....

The Hilbert action is derived for a simplicial geometry. I recover the usual Regge calculus action by way of a decomposition of the simplicial geometry into 4-dimensional cells defined by the simplicial (Delaunay) lattice as well as its dual (Voronoi) lattice. Within the simplicial geometry, the Riemann scalar curvature, the proper 4-volume, and hence, the Regge action is shown to be exact, in the sense that the definition of the action does not require one to introduce an averaging procedure,...

We consider a permanent magnetic dipole in an oscillating magnetic field. This magnetic oscillator has two dynamical symmetries. With increasing the amplitude $A$ of the magnetic field, dynamical behaviors associated with the symmetries are investigated. For small $A$, there exist symmetric states with respect to one of the two symmetries. However, such symmetric states lose their symmetries via symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcations and then the symmetry-broken states exhibit period-doubling...

Using a simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons, we construct the parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We evaluate the latter at a low hadronic scale with updated phenomenological information, and we build the momentum distributions using well-known quark models. The resulting parton distributions and structure functions are evolved to the experimental scale...

This is the first image ever taken from the surface of Mars of an overcast sky. Featured are stratus clouds coming from the northeast at about 15 miles per hour (6.7 meters/second) at an approximate height of ten miles (16 kilometers) above the surface. The "you are here" notation marks where Earth was situated in the sky at the time the image was taken. Scientists had hoped to see Earth in this image, but the cloudy conditions prevented a clear viewing. Similar images will be taken...
