The Erythemal Index is a measure of ultraviolet radiation (UV) at ground level on the Earth. UV exists to the left of the visible spectrum and is divided into three components (UV-A, UV-B and UV-C). UV-B (290-320 wavelengths) is the most dangerous form of UV radiation that can reach ground level. Atmospheric ozone shields life at the surface from most of the harmful components of solar radiation. Chemical processes in the atmosphere can effect the level of protection provided by the ozone in...

The following instability regions for blueward evolving supergiants are outlined and compared: (1) Areas in the Hertzsprung-Russell(HR) diagram where stars are dynamically unstable. (2) Areas where the effective acceleration in the upper part of the photospheres is negative, hence directed outward. (3) Areas where the sonic points of the stellar wind (Where wind velocity = sound velocity) are situated inside the photospheres, at a level deeper than tau(sub Ross) = 0.01. This is a simple, yet efficient program that will help you keep track of your running workouts, or any other aerobic exercise. You can enter and browse information pertaining to your workout such as duration, intensity, course, distance, heart rate and weight. You can also add an annotation to the file. The program automatically calculates the pace and the calories you've burned, tracks your information and allows you to view it in chart form. Help files are included.

Deep SCUBA observations of NGC 1275 at 450 micron and 850 micron along with the application of deconvolution algorithms have permitted us to separate the strong core emission in this galaxy from the fainter extended emission around it. The core has a steep spectral index and is likely due primarily to the AGN. The faint emission has a positive spectral index and is clearly due to extended dust in a patchy distribution out to a radius of $\sim$ 20 kpc from the nucleus. These observations have...

We present an upper limit on the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background at 7 degree angular scales in the frequency band between 26 and 36 GHz, produced by the POLAR experiment. The campaign produced a map of linear polarization over the R.A. range 112 degrees - 275 degrees at declination 43degrees. The model-independent upper limit on the E-mode polarization component of the CMB at angular scales l = 2 - 20 is 10 microKelvin (95% confidence). The corresponding limit for the B-mode is...

We calculate dispersion relations and propagators for the $\sigma$, $\omega$, $\rho$ and $\delta$ mesons in relativistic nuclear matter with a proton-neutron asymmetry. In addition to the $\sigma$-$\omega$ and $\delta$-$\rho$ mixings already present in symmetric matter, mixing occur between all components of the $\sigma$-$\omega$-$\delta$-$\rho$ system when the proton fraction differs from 1/2.

Motivated by the interest in lepton number violating processes, we study the connection between the rate of Z -> mu e decay and those of the low-energy processes mu ->3 e, and mu -> e conversion in nuclear field. We show that if the vector or axial Z form factors are dominant, Br(Z->mu e) is not observable, while if the Z dipole form factors are dominant, the relatively weak indirect bound Br(Z->mu e) mu e with Z->tau e and Z->tau mu decays, and suggest a simple scaling law...

We have confirmed and complemented previous conclusions from studies of the impact parameter profiles, relative to $pp$ and $\bar pp$ scattering, using a generalized eikonalized amplitude. In particular, the transition from the grey to the black disk is followed, when the energy increases beyond $\sim 3$ TeV and for the inelastic process, by a black ring surrounding the antishadow scattering mode at the center. The ranges of hadronic forces responsible for the elastic and inelastic processes...

Random Boolean networks, the Kauffman model, are revisited by means of a novel decimation algorithm, which reduces the networks to their dynamical cores. The average size of the removed part, the stable core, grows approximately linearly with N, the number of nodes in the original networks. We show that this can be understood as the percolation of the stability signal in the network. The stability of the dynamical core is investigated and it is shown that this core lacks the well known...

Three-jet production in the reaction ep --> eXp has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 42.74 pb^-1. The data were measured in the kinematic region 5 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2, 200 < W < 250 GeV and 23 < M_X < 40 GeV. The diffractive signal was selected by requiring a large rapidity gap in the outgoing proton direction. Jets were reconstructed in the centre-of-mass system of X using the exclusive k_T-algorithm. We present results of a first study of equation of state in finite-temperature QCD with two flavors of Wilson-type quarks. Simulations are made on lattices with temporal size $N_t=4$ and 6, using an RG-improved action for the gluon sector and a meanfield-improved clover action for the quark sector. The lines of constant physics corresponding to fixed values of the ratio $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V}$ of the pseudo-scalar to vector meson masses at zero temperature are determined, and the beta functions...

Recent proposals to study the mass of the "electron" neutrino at a sensitivity of 0.3 eV can be used to place limits on the right handed and scalar charged currents at a level which improves on the present experimental limits. Indeed the neglect of the possibility of such interactions can lead to the inference of an incorrect value for the mass, as we illustrate.

The shape of the measured barrier distribution for the ^{34}S + ^{168}Er reaction is analysed using the coupled-channels description. The ^{168}Er nucleus is a good candidate to test current fusion models description of deformation since it has a large quadrupole deformation with an insignificant hexadecapole deformation. Coupling to weaker channels, the 2^+_1 state in ^{34}S, the 3^-_1 state in ^{168}Er, and the pair neutron transfer channel, all were found to have little influence on the...

The Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation admits a two-dimensional solitary wave solution representing two mutually self-propelled, anti-parallel straight line vortices. The complete sequence of such solitary wave solutions has been computed by Jones and Roberts (J. Phys. A, 15, 2599, 1982). These solutions are unstable with respect to three-dimensional perturbations (the Crow instability). The most unstable mode has a wavelength along the direction of the vortices of the same order as their...

Multi-band Gutzwiller-correlated wave functions reconcile the contrasting concepts of itinerant band electrons versus electrons localized in partially filled atomic shells. The exact evaluation of these variational ground states in the limit of large coordination number allows the identification of quasi-particle band structures, and the calculation of a variational spinwave dispersion. The study of a generic two-band model elucidates the co-operation of the Coulomb repulsion and the...

We discuss an universal relation $\epsilon(i\kappa)=0$ with ${\rm Re} \kappa=1/\xi$ in 1D quantum spin systems with an excitation gap, where $\epsilon(k)$ is the dispersion curve of the low-energy excitation and $\xi$ is the correlation length of the ground-state. We first discuss this relation for integrable models such as the Ising model in a transverse filed and the XYZ model. We secondly make a derivation of the relation for general cases, in connection with the equilibrium crystal shape in...

The nonclassical effect of photon anti-bunching is observed in the mixed field of a narrow band two-photon source and a coherent field under certain condition. A variety of different features in photon statistics are found to be the consequence of a two-photon interference effect with dependence on the relative phase of the fields. Besides the anti-bunching effect, we find another one of the features to be also nonclassical. These features emphasize the importance of quantum entanglement.
