Students at all levels of study in the theory of probability and in the theory of statistics will find in this book a broad and deep cross-section of problems (and their solutions) ranging from the simplest combinatorial probability prob lems in finite sample spaces through information theory, limit theorems and the use of moments. The introductions to the sections in each chapter establish the basic formulas and notation and give a general sketch of that part of the theory that is to be...

Aqueous phase-separated polymer solutions can be used as support media for the partition of biological macromolecules, organelles and cells. Cell separations using the technique have proven to be extremely sensitive to cell surface properties but application of the systems are limited to cells or aggregates which do not significantly while the phases are settling. Partition in zero g in principle removes this limitation but an external driving force must be applied to induce the phases to...

A model single-stage fan with variable inlet guide vanes (VIGV) was designed to demonstrate efficient point operation while providing flow and pressure ratio modulation capability required for a V/STOL propulsion system. The fan stage incorporates a split-flap VIGV with an independently actuated ID flap to permit independent modulation of fan and core engine airstreams, a flow splitter integrally designed into the blade and vanes to completely segregate fan and core airstreams in order to...

Topic: Markov processes

This thesis developed a deterministic Markov state model to provide the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps a tool to more accurately forecast recruiting goals and future years force structure. Nurse Corps data was provided by the Nurse Corps Community Manager's office covering fiscal years 1990 to 2003. The probabilities used in the Markov model were derived from the fiscal year data. Transitions used in this model were stay at present grade, move up one grade or exit the system. Backward movement was not...

The problem of partitioning a digital image into segments is considered. First the procedure is illustrated for the analogous one-dimensional problem, namely, segmentation of time series. Then similar ideas are applied to the segmentation of digital images. The segments are considered as falling into classes. A probability distribution is associated with each class of segment. Parametric families of distributions are considered, a set of parameter values being associated with each class. With...

This report describes models for the aircraft engine replacement processes and models for the probability distribution of engine ages at failure. Potential uses of these models for predicting replacement requirements are discussed. Also models for the randomness of flying hours on different aircraft are proposed for the study of the effect on replacement models which assume each aircraft flies an equal share of a flying hour program. The first section briefly describes the problem of computing...

We consider a bilinear signal process driven by a, Gauss-Markov process which is observed in additive, white, gaussian noise. An exact stochastic differential equation for the least squares filter is derived when the signal process satisfies a nilpotency condition. It is shown that the filter is also bilinear and moreover that it satisfies an analogous nilpotency condition. Finally, an example is presented and ways of reducing filter dimensionality discussed. A semi-Markovian point process is defined, for which the intervals of time between successive events have phase type distribution. The distribution of the number of events in an interval is examined, and it is shown how the expected number of events in an interval may be efficiently computed. A stationary version of the process is analysed. In particular, the necessary and sufficient condition under which the new process is a renewal process is determined. Simple sufficient conditions are...

Pardoux's results on the Zakai equation for nonlinear filtering are extended to cover the case of estimating a signal modified by a potential term. This is applied to state a rigorous Zakai equation for certain filtering problems invovling signals with entrance boundaries.

Hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) is a general framework that studies how to exploit the structure of actions and tasks to accelerate policy learning in large domains. Prior work on HRL has been limited to the discrete-time discounted reward semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) model. In this paper we generalize the setting of HRL to average-reward, continuous-time and multi-agent SMDP models. We also describe experimental results from a large-scale real-world domain, attesting to the...

This thesis develops a new statistical framework for analyzing and processing stationary non-Gaussian signals. The proposed framework consists of a collection of mathematical techniques for modeling such signals as well as an associated collection of model-based algorithms for solving certain basic signal processing problems. Two inference problems commonly encountered in practice are given special consideration: (i) identification of the parameter values of a non-Gaussian signal source based...

In most sensor network applications, the vector containing the observations gathered by the sensors lies in a space of dimension equal to the number of nodes, typically because of observation noise, even though the useful signal belongs to a subspace of much smaller dimension. This motivates smoothing or rank reduction. We formulate a convex optimization problem, where we incorporate a fidelity constraint that prevents the final smoothed estimate from diverging too far from the observations....

Built on a hierarchical access structure with primary and secondary users, opportunistic spectrum access improves spectrum efficiency while maintaining compatibility with legacy wireless systems. The basic idea is to allow secondary users to exploit instantaneous spectrum availability while limiting the interference to primary users. In this article, we identify basic components, fundamental trade-offs, and practical constraints in opportunistic spectrum access. We introduce a...
